Private balance

Your private balance is HYPE inside the Lethe pool that only you can see and spend. It isn't held by Lethe, and it isn't tied to your wallet address on-chain.
How it's stored
Each piece of your balance is a record called a note. On-chain, a note is only a commitment, a hash that reveals nothing. Next to it sits an encrypted copy of the amount, which only your keys can decrypt. When the site loads, it reads every note in the pool, tries to decrypt each one, and adds up the ones that are yours.
Where the keys come from
When you connect, you sign a fixed message. Lethe turns that signature into two keys on your device: a spending key and an encryption key. The same wallet always produces the same signature, so it always produces the same keys.
This means
- Nothing to back up. Connect the same wallet on any device and your balance comes back.
- Nothing stored by us. Lethe's server never sees your keys or your balance.
- Your wallet is the backup. If you lose your wallet, nobody can recover the balance.
Why it may merge notes
Each proof can spend at most two notes. If your balance is spread across many small ones, Lethe merges them first so a single send can cover the amount. Each merge costs 0.0005 HYPE and happens automatically.
